Why LED display pixel pitch begins with viewing distance

A smaller pixel pitch is not automatically a better display. The useful specification is the one that makes content look correct from the closest real viewing position without adding cost and complexity the audience cannot see.

Start with the closest viewer

Pixel pitch is the distance between LED pixel centres. When people stand close, a finer pitch reduces visible pixel structure and improves text and image detail. At longer distances, the eye blends a wider pitch into a continuous image.

Measure the realistic minimum distance, not only the average distance. Retail queues, entrances and circulation paths often bring viewers closer than a drawing suggests.

Content and brightness matter too

Small typography, product detail and faces require more resolution than bold motion graphics. Outdoor daylight also requires much higher brightness than an interior wall, while excessive indoor brightness can be uncomfortable.

The display format, ambient light, operating hours and camera use should be included in the same decision.
